Hello writers!
Are you developing a new musical? Do you want to see it brought to life in a collaborative, workshop environment, with a large cast of young performers?
NYMT is inviting writers and creative teams to submit their musicals for workshopping and development as part of our 2026 season.
Guidelines for submitted pieces
🎭 The piece should be suitable for a company of 30 or more performers. The roles do not have to be equally weighted, but if there is a principal/ensemble structure, the ensemble should have a meaningful share of stage time.
🎭 The piece should not have previously had a professional production.
🎭 Content should be suitable for a company of young performers.
👉 Note: NYMT have recently produced very successful production of Spring Awakening and Parade, so don’t be put off by this - just be mindful!
⚡ As with our auditions for performing company members, we are looking for potential rather than finished pieces. We understand that creating new musicals means being open to change – things may evolve drastically before, during, and after the workshop process.
🎶 Don’t let a lack of experience stop you from applying – new voices are exactly what we are looking for!
We are particularly curious about pieces that:
🎭 Embrace a predominantly female ensemble, offering rich roles and dynamic storytelling.
🎭 Are designed for performers under 18, making full use of the talent, energy, and storytelling potential of a young company.
🎭 Push the boundaries of musical theatre, experimenting with form, structure, or storytelling in fresh and innovative ways.
What we offer
What to submit
To apply, you will need:
1. A synopsis of your musical.
2. An outline cast list, including character ages and vocal types.
3. A brief note about your vision for the piece & what you’d like to explore in a workshop.
4. Two song demos (these don’t need to be professionally recorded!)
5. Two scenes (one of which should contain a song, so that we can understand how music and text work together in this piece)
If the work is at a super early stage and you don’t yet have songs/ scenes, you can submit examples of previous work instead.
If the piece is at a later stage then you are welcome to submit additionally the entire script/score (if available), but please do still include the core materials listed above.
We can’t wait to read your work!
Submit your materials“Thank you for spending so much time and care supporting and nurturing new writers and new work.”
