What is an NYMT Skills workshop?

NYMT Skills workshops are an opportunity for young actors aged 10-23 to work intensively with our outstanding creatives in the three disciplines of acting, singing and dance. They are available as residential and non-residential. Many are available in the first instance only to those who come to our audition workshop days in January and February each year.

What to expect

Each workshop is led by three professional creatives: a director, a choreographer and a musical director, all supported by our excellent pastoral staff. There will be around 25 young people aged 10-23 on each workshop.

The workshops help you develop your skills across the full spectrum of performing skills, with the opportunity to discuss with the creatives anything that you'd like to focus on during the week. There will be lots of group activity, such as learning dance routines, scene work and chorus singing, as well as individual singing work. Where you've come through our auditions process, or attended a previous project with us, we'll use the notes from these previous experiences to help tailor the work we do with you. There's often the opportunity to develop audition technique, and get face-to-face feedback from our professional creatives about how to take the next steps in your development. Our Skills Workshops are a great opportunity for anyone looking to develop their performing skills generally in a supportive environment at whatever level they're currently at.

Residential workshops

Many of our Skills workshops are residential. They're hosted at boarding schools in the UK, which means they're in an environment designed for young people. Living together is a key part of the NYMT experience and the best way to make new friends with people who share your love of music theatre, all in a space where you are safe to be who you want to be.

Accommodation is comfortable and three cooked meals a day are provided. Everyone is looked after at all hours of the day and night by our experienced pastoral team. You may need to share a room, but it'll be with someone who is similar in age to you and who is the same gender as you.

The days are long: typically we get going with breakfast at 8am and a warmup at 9am. There are breaks and meals throughout the day, which will finish mid-evening, typically between 8 and 9pm. After that there's the opportunity for some socialising back in the boarding house before bed. Often there will be other NYMT projects rehearsing on site, and the opportunity to meet others and hear what they've been up to.

Non-residential

Lots about our non-residential Skills workshops is just the same as our residential workshops, except that you go home at the end of the day! Typically we'll start mid-morning and finish early evening (before dinner), but otherwise the days are just as intense and will include a mixture of singing, acting and dancing.

These workshops typically take place at specialist venues, such as drama schools or theatres, and will be led by three outstanding creative professionals and supported by our wonderful pastoral staff.

Our non-residential workshops are perfect if you're new to NYMT and want to see what we're about, or aren't yet ready to take the plunge with a residential experience.
