No production can operate without a skilled assistant team!
As well as our courses for your creatives, there is a whole range of different opportunities for those looking to assist the professional creatives on our productions and workshops (Directors, Musical Directors, Choreographers or Designers) aged 16–23.
All our productions and many of our other projects have roles for assistants on our Creative & Production Pathway.
How to apply See the 2025 programmeWork with exceptional theatre directors to learn about production planning, actor direction and artistic vision. You'll be part of the creative process from the start, helping to shape the work in the rehearsal room from the first minute to the last, and assisting with plenty of work outside it.
You will collaborate with professional choreographers to understand movement, staging and dance integration. You will play an important role in understanding blocking, footwork and spacing detail and help the cast with their performance. There may be the opportunity to run warmups, cleaning sessions or a rehearsal.
You will gain insights into musical arrangement, scoring, vocal coaching, conducting and working with performers. You'll work alongside the Musical Director, helping them realise their vision and ensuring the highest quality of work from instrumental musicians (where applicable) and on-stage performers. You may also have the opportunity to perform with a production's pit band.
The Set and Costume Designer plays a pivotal role as part of the core creative team on a production, responsible for creating a world for the show and ensuring the production feels cohesive and original. As an assistant you'll work with the designer and hear about their vision for the show, attending production meetings and planning sessions with the other creatives. During rehearsals you'll suport the Stage Management team with curating and making props before supporting the visuals of the production through the technical rehearsal process. You'll be pivotal in ensuring the highest level of quality across many aspects of a production.
