Ali is autistic with associated learning difficulties. Her mum writes about her recent experience with NYMT...
I wanted to put something in writing about Ali’s fantastic week at NYMT. I was nervous before arrival as I wasn’t sure how it would work out for her and if she would enjoy it. How wrong I was! Ali was welcomed on her first morning and from then on became part of the company. She lacked confidence at first and needed a bit of extra help and time to learn the routines but she worked hard throughout the week to try to perfect her parts and was soon doing things more independently, including remembering stage directions and timings and going for meals with the other kids, not wanting me to cramp her style!
She has gained so much from the week, like working with others, listening well, how to behave on stage and the benefits and rewards of working hard on something to succeed. All these are very transferable skills for her. The other kids took her under their wing and were so considerate of her additional needs and prepared to help her where needed, despite them being very busy themselves. She has made some good friends. I hope her being in the company has helped them, too, as skills like tolerance and supporting others are valuable for them.
Thank you to everyone in the team for being so patient with her and giving her this opportunity in the first place! She loved every minute.
Our residential summer course at Sevenoaks School provides a fun, inspiring and invaluable training experience for young people with a passion for musical theatre. Suitable for ages 11+, the course will be led by NYMT's team of outstanding theatre practitioners within Sevenoaks School's award-winning performing arts complex, The Space.
No audition is required for the Summer Course. Through daily classes and workshops, participants will learn new skills and develop existing strengths as they create and perform their own piece of musical theatre. There will be many opportunities for solo and ensemble work and a chance to perform in their own evening Cabaret. The course culminates in an informal performance for family, friends and staff.
Full board accommodation is provided at Sevenoaks School with 24-hour pastoral care. There is always a wide choice of meals on offer and care is taken to cater for any special dietary requirements. Male and female participants are accommodated separately and usually in shared rooms according to age. Each house is under the supervision of our experienced pastoral staff.
The course fee covers the cost of all meals and accommodation as well as the professional tuition and pastoral care.
