The Shows 2019

NYMT's exciting 2019 season features five outstanding musicals - three of them new.

Following a hugely successful summer workshop on GROWL - The True Story of the Big Bad Wolf by Timothy Knapman and Laurence Mark Wythe, we take the show on the road for a mini-tour of festivals.

Our annual residency at London's The Other Palace will feature three contrasting works. Amid religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension, the stirring Tony Award-winning PARADE explores the endurance of love and hope against all the odds. With a book by acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry and a rousing, colourful and haunting score by Jason Robert Brown, PARADE tells the tragic, true story of the trial and lynching of a man wrongly accused of murder.

Our new commission for 2019 is LEGEND TRIPPERS by Scott Gilmour and Claire Mackenzie aka Noisemaker. LEGEND TRIPPERS uses the lens of a group of mismatched school kids who all share a love of the supernatural to explore themes of social and political division, shining a light on how we treat "outsiders".

The third of our productions for The Other Palace is the classic Cole Porter musical, ANYTHING GOES. Music, dance, laughs, and the age-old tale of Boy Meets Girl – ANYTHING GOES is a hilarious shipboard romp, wrapped around one of Cole Porter’s most magical scores.

Continuing our series of workshops of new musicals in development, we shall be inviting submissions from emerging writers with a view to taking their work forward to full production at The Other Palace in 2020. A fully cast workshop of the selected piece will form part of our summer residency at Sevenoaks School.

Dates and details are shown below.

GROWL

Première of a new musical

Book and lyrics by Timothy Knapman
Music and lyrics by Laurence Mark Wythe

We all think we know the story of the big, bad Wolf but the truth is much more surprising… Far from being the dangerous predator who tries to eat anyone he meets – assorted pigs, granddaughters and easily-impersonated old ladies – he is, in fact, the guardian of the forest who presides over a happy and diverse family of fairy tale characters. But when a sharp-talking Woodcutter and his gang of henchmen turn up with deforestation and redevelopment on their minds, they know that the Wolf is the only one standing in their way. Once they’ve sown the seeds of doubt amongst his friends, the Wolf – and his woodland family – will be tested to breaking point, and his murky past will come back to haunt him.

LEGEND TRIPPERS

Commissioned by NYMT for 2019 Season

Book & lyrics by Scott Gilmour
Music by Claire McKenzie

Our new commission for 2019 is LEGEND TRIPPERS by Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie.

What do a cheerleader, a science geek, a sports jock and a hardcore emo all have in common? They’re all members of the Legend Trippers; a group of unlikely high school heroes who band together to conquer their town's most haunted spots and sites. But when a new girl comes to town, the Trippers find themselves in a legend of their own. A brand new musical by Noisemaker, LEGEND TRIPPERS uses joyous, energetic storytelling and song to examine the legends we are passing on today, and how we might benefit others by questioning them.

Noisemaker is the award-winning writing partnership of bookwriter/lyricist Scott Gilmour and composer Claire McKenzie. Both graduates of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the pair work throughout the UK and internationally to create innovative, original work to challenge the expectations of musical theatre.
